Teacher walkouts continue, BCTF to decide Wednesday about next week

It’s day three of the BC Teacher’s Federation rotating walkouts.

In our area teachers are off the job Wednesday in the Qualicum District, and officials with SD 69 are telling parents not to send their kids to school and buses have been cancelled.

Teachers on the Sunshine Coast are poised to walk out Thursday.

School District 46 Assistant Superintendent Greg Kitchen says they’re sending the same message; keep the kids at home or find alternatives.

Kitchen says on-site day cares run by private contractors, but the Strong Start Centres, which have unionized staff, will be behind the picket lines.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District rec department is offering  a special day camp tomorrow, but space is limited.

Negotiations are continuing, and  BCTF President Jim Iker is expected to announce Wednesday afternoon if the union will continue the walkouts into next week.  He says it’s likely unless there’s major progress at the bargaining table.Thursday, the government and the union are scheduled for a Labour Relations Board hearing on the legality of cutting teachers’ pay and making the BCTF cover benefit costs during the job action and lockout.
