New backstop to be installed at Hackett Park

The southwest baseball diamond in Hackett Park is closed for the next 4 to 6 weeks while some upgrades are done.

District of Sechelt Parks Manager, Perry Schmitt said the diamond was closed last year and the men’s fastball league had to move their games to Kinnikinnick Park as a result of public safety concerns.

Balls were flying out of the park into people’s yards and a new 16-foot high backstop with an overhang that extends to the first and third bases that’s being installed is expected to put a stop to that.

Schmitt said there were also some behavioral issues associated with the players but he’s hoping the move helped the members understand those can’t continue either because the park borders a residential neighbourhood.

The diamond is located at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and
Dolphin Street.

The project is actually being managed by the league who got a 50,000 dollar grant from the District’s Community Forest Legacy funds to replace the backstop.

The Northeast baseball diamond and playfield will remain open during construction.
