Home-based workers on the Coast outnumber the rest of B.C.

There have been numerous new businesses open on the lower Sunshine Coast but they are not so easy to see.

That’s because they are people who work out of their home, or have no fixed workplace.

According to Stats Canada, more than 30 per cent of the people employed in Gibsons, Sechelt and the surrounding communities don’t necessarily leave their home every day to go to work.

The average for B.C. is 19 per cent.

Sunshine Coast Regional Economic Development Organization’s executive director Chris Hergesheimer said the Sunshine Coast ticks a lot of boxes for home-based workers.

“A couple hours away from Vancouver, the internet is good, and there’s a whole culture emerged over here for home-workers and the support for that. It’s very socially acceptable. It is a big attractant to wanting to make the move over here.”

The Town of Gibsons recently won the small community category Open for Business award from Small Business B.C. with more than 185 new businesses created since January of 2017.
