IIO concludes “no wrongdoing” by police

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has concluded its investigation into an incident in Sechelt that happened 9 days ago (April 9).

The Office was called in to investigate after a suspect died while being apprehended.

Sunshine Coast RCMP responded to a report at a local bank regarding a suspected fraud in progress.

When police arrived the suspect attempted to flee and was apprehended by about 500 metres away but then went into medical distress.

He was given immediate medical attention by police and a local doctor and nurse until BC Emergency Health Services arrived but he was pronounced dead in hospital.

The IIO has determined police were acting in the lawful execution of their duty in detaining the man but he had exerted himself when he ran away.

The investigation, which included information from an autopsy, has demonstrated that there is no evidence of any injuries caused to the man, or that the action or inaction of officers was responsible for his death.

Rather, he appears to have died as the result of natural causes.
