IIO investing after police suspect dies during incident

RCMP have notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia following an incident on the Sunshine Coast which has resulted in a man’s death.

Just before 4 Tuesday, officers from the Sunshine Coast RCMP were called to a banking institution in the 5500-block of Sunshine Coast Highway in Sechelt, for a report that a man was attempting to conduct a fraudulent transaction.

Upon arrival the bank, the man was identified and detained by police.

While officers were escorting the man to the car, the man allegedly fled from police on foot and that’s when a foot pursuit took the parties into a thick blackberry brush area, where the man was located and arrested.

While officers were attempting to get the man out of the brush, he complained of breathing problems, collapsed and became unresponsive.

Officers began life saving measures, which were assumed by BC Emergency Health Services personnel.

Despite all efforts, the man could not be resuscitated and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The IIO is now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s death.

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.

Police say at no time were any shots fired and any loud noises people heard were a coincidence.
