Teachers begin rotating walkouts; pickets go up in Nanaimo Tuesday, Sunshine Coast Thursday

Education Minister Peter Fassbender is calling it a disruption parents and students don’t deserve.
The BC Teachers’ Federation has started rotating walkouts. Picket lines are up inĀ 17 school districts today.
Nanaimo Ladysmith teachers are set to walk out May 27th, Qualicum teachers will stage their strike May 28th andĀ Sunshine Coast teachers will be picketing on May 29th.
School Districts are telling parents not to send students to school on the strike days.
Donna Reimer of the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District, says the pickets will also affect Strong Start Centres.
Assistant Superintendent Greg Kitchen of School District 46 says on the Sunshine Coast they’re still not certain if Strong Start will be impacted.
Some options are available for parents. In Nanaimo, for instance, the parks and rec department has a special day camp scheduled for tomorrow and on the Sunshine Coast the YMCA’s Camp Elphinstone is planning something for Thursday.
When teachers aren’t involved in aĀ walkout, they’ll be working under a partial lock-out imposed by the Public School Employers Association.Ā  BothĀ school districts say at this point its unclear what impact that might have on field trips and extracurricular activities, but they’re doing their best to keep parents informed.
