Procurement deal to benefit communities

Communities across Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast will benefit from an initiative launched to change how local governments purchase goods and services as part of the worldwide movement of social procurement.

The goal of the initiative is to better use tax dollars to achieve good social outcomes for coastal communities.

Every year, local governments on Vancouver Island and coastal communities award contracts for goods and services valuing approximately $1.5 billion.

Social procurement means that at the same time as the money is spent on improving communities, local benefits delivered through procurement will be increased through economic development, local employment, increased affordability and greater access to services.
