Issue with chlorine dioxide generator forces brief evacuation at HSPP

Officials at Howe Sound Pulp and Paper say a problem with their chlorine dioxide generation system forced a partial evacuation of the mill.

The evacuation sirens sounded at 1:45 in the afternoon Wednesday, and the all clear was given at 3.  Nobody was hurt.

Chlorine dioxide is one of the chemicals used to “bleach” pulp

Late last week the mill cancelled plans to start its annual power boiler shutdown this week.  It’s now slated for early July.
