Slocan Lake search suspended after 10 days

RCMP in the Kootenays say they’re suspending the search for 3 victims of a canoeing accident on Slocan Lake.

They include a young man from Gibsons and one with ties to the Nanaimo area.

There’s been no sign of 21 year-old Hayden Kyle, 18 year-old Skye Donnet and one other victim since their canoe capsized on May 10th.  A 19 year-old woman was found with the boat and died in hospital.

RCMP say at various points the searchers included an RCMP dive team, RCMP helicopter, Arrow Lakes Search & Rescue, Slocan Lake Fire Dept, Vernon Search & Rescue and Bruce’s Legacy.

Bruce’s Legacy, is a U.S.-based volunteer group that recovers drowning victims. They got involved through Donnet’s grandmother, who’s from Nanaimo and met them when they were in the city earlier this year training with an underwater ROV.

A statement on their website says the group will continue on, at least for another couple of days,  “We couldn t walk away after driving so far and not providing the family and community the closure they would like.”
