Feds and First Nation sign important LOU

The Federal Government and Shishalh Nation have signed a Letter of Understanding.

Through the L-O-U, Shishalh Nation is going to explore the priorities that would support the negotiation of a nation to nation reconciliation agreement.

Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations says this is a significant step forward for both parties involved.

“About a year ago we began to sit down with Shishalh to see what would be their priorities as we move forward in terms of their governance and be able to create the path forward nation to nation.”

Chief Waren Paull says they entered into the L-O-U with Canada as an exercise of their governance and to enhance the exercise of Shishalh’s title and rights.

The announcement is vague because the contents of the document are not being made public.

The Federal government is only saying the discussions will centre around how to implement the First Nation’s title and rights including their right to self-determination, will advance socio-economic prosperity and health for the members and revitalize the Shishalh language and culture.
