Teachers waiting for details after province announces new offer

Cautious optimism from area teachers after word the government is shifting its position at the bargaining table, but they say the devil is in the details.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender is dropping the idea of a 10 year deal, saying the government is willing to go with 6.  And, they’re offering a signing bonus.

Lousie Herle is president of the Sunshine Coast Teachers Association.

The full offer will be tabled during Friday’s talks with the BCTF.

But Mike Ball of the Nanaimo District Teachers Association says unless there’s other significant changes there won’t be much progress.

BCTF President Jim Iker echoes that.  He says until he sees government’s latest proposal, he can’t say how workable it is.  Iker also says the union needs to see movement on class size and composition.
