NDP Ferries Critic, and North Island MLA, Claire Trevena wants to make sure ferries are built in BC – by making it the law.
Trevena introduced a private members bill this week called the Provincial Shipbuilding Act.
It would make it mandatory to build ferries, seabuses, and other vessels used by and for the public in BC, here in the province.
She says with BC Ferries embarking on a major buiding program the NDP wants to make sure the benefits stay at home.
Trevena says building just three ferries in B.C. would boost the economy by $378.5 million, put more than a thousand people to work, trigger $200 million in consumer spending, and $30 million in tax revenue.
