NDP Aboriginal Affairs critic Jean Crowder says she’s not expecting any action from the Conservative government after a highly critical UN report on First Nations.
James Anaya, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, says relations between governments and First Nations in Canada are at the crisis point.
He says one of the reasons is high levels of distrust toward government at both the federal and provincial level.
Crowder, MP for Nanaimo-Cowichan, says there are several reasons for that.
Anaya also wants the federal government to call an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women.
Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt says the government will review the report and decide later how to address the recommendations. Crowder says that’s little more than a typical government response.
