Hilton plans unveiled for public, Council still to deal with rezoning app.

There were some questions and concerns about height, but the people behind plans for a new luxury hotel in Nanaimo say their concept got a positive reception at a public open house.

Insight Developments is working with Stantec to put a Hilton on the properties at 10 and 28 Front Street, where the company originally planned to put condos.

The group is looking for a rezoning, which still hasn’t gone to City Council.  At 30 storeys it would be among the tallest buildings in Nanaimo, and that height was something people at Tuesday’s open house had a lot of questions about.

But John Steil of Stantec says with the majority of the complex being just 6 storeys, the height and design of the tower won’t have a huge impact.

Meanwhile, construction on Nanaimo’s other big hotel project, a $50-million, 21 storey, conference centre hotel being built by Chinese travel company SSS Manhao could start soon.
