No support for supportive housing in Nanaimo neighbourhood

The new housing supportive housing property on Terminal Avenue has resulted in numerous safety issues for residents in the Newcastle neighbourhood.

Councillors and city staff have heard the complaints from various residents via phone and email and at a recent council meeting resident Darrel Gyorfi reiterated what’s been going on.

“There’s actually drug dealers that live on site, thefts, car alarms are going off at 5 o’clock in the morning, people are scared to even leave their houses to go and check on their cars in the middle of the night, shoplifting, garbage bins are not covered and birds are hauling garbage all over the neighbourhood, there’s public urination, defecation, assaults.”

Councillor Ian Thorpe said council is well aware of the problems and working to address them.

“You are being listened to and I assure you that we are at work to do what we can and make this situation safer for everybody.”

Mayor Leonard Krog said the housing was put in place clumsily by the province and BC Housing and the victims, as a result, are many.

Both he and Councillor Sheryl Armstrong pointed out the process used to put the housing in place bypassed the usual City involvement.
