"Satellite City" on permanent display at VICC

There’s a colourful new addition to the Ballroom Lobby at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

As a kickoff to Public Art Week, a large acrylic painting by Nanaimo artist Robert Naish is being unveiled on Monday at 5:00pm during a brief ceremony.

It’s a vivid, abstract take on an aerial shot of Nanaimo and it’s called “Satellite City”. Naish says he’s thrilled it’s hang in such a prominent spot because he prefers art to be accessible to everyone.

The painting was donated to the City of Nanaimo, by the estate of Marlene Flater, a local arts supporter who passed away in 2011.

The City will also be unveiling two other public art pieces this week, as part of their temporary art program. One will be located outside the Port Theatre and the other will be situated near the wooden Dungeness crab along the seawall.
