A dozen cannabis shop applicants in the queue in Nanaimo

It’s going to be a while yet before any legal, retail cannabis shops throw open their doors in Nanaimo.

The City started taking applications October 22nd and Manager of Current Planning, Lainya Rowett said 11 are in the stream.

“Those have been sent out for referrals, questions, and comments from our internal department as well as to external stakeholders, like the RCMP. When we gather all of that feedback we put that together into a letter back to the applicant outlining any additional information we might need, or any clarification before we can then take their proposed bylaw forward for council consideration.”

“Spring is going to be the time that we anticipate some applications coming forward for council to consider.”

Rowett said after a bylaw passes two readings, there will be a public hearing before the final reading.

Then the City will notify the province the applicant has been successful.

The province will take that successful application into consideration before determining whether or not it will grant a proponent a license to operate.
