Homeless shelter to reopen in Gibsons for winter

A temporary cold weather homeless shelter is set to reopen in Gibsons on Wednesday.

There will be 20 shelter spaces at Christ the King Community Church (599 Gower Point Road) and they’ll be open from 6 in the evening until 8 in the morning.

Town of Gibsons’ CAO Emanuel Machado says they are appreciative of the provincial government as they were the ones who provided this funding.

“Unfortunately, the need for a facility like this still exists,” said Machado.

“The town is trying to work on some long-term solutions. But while we do that, this will provide some immediate support for folks who are struggling at this point.”

Raincity Housing will be the operators of the facility and hot meals will be provided.

The shelter will be open until March 31st, 2019.

Through a media a release, the province also says more temporary shelters and extreme weather shelters may be added throughout the season as needed and where appropriate.
