1 Port Place soon to be a vacant lot again in Nanaimo

The tent city in Nanaimo, that was the source of so much stress and strain and public safety concerns, at 1 Port Drive is going to be history.

That’s according to the Mayor of Nanaimo Leonard Krog who said, “The site will be vacated in just a matter of days. If necessary, if some insist on trying to stay, the RCMP will deal with that accordingly. A court order was granted. That court order was still in place and we expect it to be executed.”

Krog said the temporary housing at 250 Terminal Avenue is a little bit behind schedule but the housing on Labieux Road is ready for tenants.

Krog said once occupants have left the site, City work crews will close it, secure it and, clear it of debris and any remaining structures.

He said since the site was erected largely on the pavement, he doesn’t expect any major clean up costs.
