Homeless situation in Nanaimo improving

The mayor of Nanaimo says plans are falling into place that should help with the homelessness situation in the Harbour City.

A court had given the tent city residents on Port Drive until November 30th to move along and BC Housing has been working to get some temporary modular housing in place before then.

Leonard Krog said the temporary, modular housing is under construction.

“That process is going reasonably well. Whether the dates will be exactly hit, precisely by BC Housing and the province I can’t say at this point. The construction is underway, you can drive by the sites, both of them, and we are certainly all hopeful that it can be completed in a timely way.”

In the meantime, Krog says BC Housing is working with residents of tent city to find them somewhere to live and the encampment has been shrinking.

As for more permanent, affordable housing in Nanaimo, Krog says every member of the council is very conscious of the homeless issue and they intend to work with the province to secure the kind of housing the community needs and citizens require.
