Flag raisings planned for Louis Riel day

Friday is Louis Riel Day.

Both the Town of Gibsons and the District of Sechelt will have flag-raising ceremonies to commemorate the day.

Sechelt resident Ron Paradis and President of the United Canadian Metis Nation believes it’s a significant day for people of all backgrounds.

“It’s quite an honour and an emotional time for Metis and the people of all cultures. When you get recognition from communities like the Sunshine Coast, Vancouver, Victoria it’s quite special.”

Paradis noted Riel was an icon who fought for basic human rights for and these flag-raising ceremonies are historic.

The flag raising at the Gibsons municipal hall starts 10 on Friday. The one in Sechelt is also at the municipal hall and it begins at 1.
