BC Ferries suing German firm, claiming faulty system a factor in Duke Point "hard landing"

BC Ferries is suing the company that designed and built part of the control system on the Coastal Inspiration.

In a suit filed Friday in Nanaimo, Ferries claims problems with the SAM Electronics system contributed to the December 20th,  2011 “hard landing” at Duke Point that left the terminal out of action for about 5 months.

In its report, the Transportation Safety Board also pointed to the actions of the bridge crew as contributing to the accident.  The Ferries lawsuit alleges one of the problems with the German company’s system is it didn’t give an adequate warning signal.

Ferries is asking for damages to the tune of about 4-million dollars.

SAM Electronics has yet to respond, and none of BC Ferries’ claims have been proven in court.
