Above average grades for SCRD fire departments

Sunshine Coast volunteers firefighters are getting recognized for the great work they do for the community.

The results of an independent Fire Underwriters Survey shows the four departments in Gibsons, Roberts Creek, Halfmoon Bay and Egmont received above-average ratings for public fire protection.

“The Fire Underwriters is a national group that establishes insurance rates for towns and municipalities,” said Bill Higgs, Bill Higgs, Fire Chief of Special Projects for the Sunshine Coast Regional District.

“They’ll come in and look at the fire department’s ability to control major fires, their fire prevention program, their public education program, and training. They’ll review everything and establish a point system.”

Higgs also said when these departments get above average ratings, people who own commercial properties will see a significant drop in the amount of fire insurance they pay.

“A lot of the credit has to be given to the volunteer firefighters and the people who are working behind the scene at the regional district.”
