Provincial staff working through retail cannabis applications

The province has received 173 application for cannabis retail outlets.

One one has been approved to open when marijuana sales become legal on Wednesday.

It’s in Kamloops.

B.C.’s public safety minister Mike Farnworth says 62 other applications have been completed and submitted to the government for consideration.

He says 35 of those should be open in the coming months, but he didn’t give any firm timelines of when that will happen, or they are.

Part of the process for approving retail outlets includes background and security checks to ensure there are no links to organized crime.

According to Farnworth, the province’s online portal will be ready to handle an anticipated surge of online marijuana purchases.
