SD 68 trustees pass job-cutting budget in narrow vote

Trustees with the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District are going ahead with a job-cutting budget, but it was close.

The 2014/15 financial plan was passed Monday night, 5 to 4.

It trims a little over $5.4 million, and cuts the equivalent of 12 full time teaching jobs, 16 full time support worker jobs and 1 admin position.

The support workers are represented by CUPE.  Local president Rob Zver says those “full time equivalent” numbers hide the true impact on his members through things like reduced hours.

Board Chair Dot Neary, who voted for the budget, says the decisions were not easy ones. That said, she feels it’s important they be made locally, because not passing a balanced budget would risk having the province appoint an administrator as they did recently with the Cowichan School Board.

Neary says the close result speaks to the fact trustees are very reluctant to make cuts that take away from the classroom.
