Sunshine Coast governments eager for more information on Metro Van WTE project

Local governments on the Sunshine Coast are taking a “wait and see” approach to the issue of garbage incineration.

Nanaimo Council is demanding the city be taken off a list of potential sites for Metro Vancouver’s waste to energy project.  A site near Port Mellon is also on that list.

The Town of Gibsons sent staff to a meeting on the project this week in Burnaby, which also attracted a large crowd of protestors.

Speaking Thursday night on Coast TV, mayor Wayne Rowe said even though Metro has cancelled a planned public meeting in the Town, they want to see more information before weighing in.

One Gibsons Councillor, Charlene San Jenko, has already come out publicly to declare her opposition to the waste to energy project.

A very simple fact is complicating how Sunshine Coast governments can respond; the site in question near Port Mellon is on Squamish First Nation territory, taking it out of the jurisdiction of the Regional District.

SCRD Chair Garry Nohr says they have been talking with the Squamish Nation about the project.
