HSPP annual shutdown underway

More than 600 additional workers are on the Sunshine Coast to help out with Howe Sound Pulp & Paper annual maintenance shutdown.

“This $12 million dollar shutdown will take a few weeks and residents can expect local restaurants and hotels to be busier than usual,” said Kathy Cloutier, director of Communications with Paper Excellence, owner of Howe Sound.

“We have about 650 contractors working along with our regular employees over a three week period. Traditionally we have some pre-shutdown work that’s carried out, leading up to that shut down which began today. So while the shutdown is ten days, work before, during and after usually takes about three weeks.”
Cloutier also believes those contractors will spend roughly half a million dollars on the Sunshine Coast during their work period.
