Gambier residents still hope to stop logging plans

Gambier Island residents trying to stop logging on a pair of woodlots near Gambier Lake say there’s still time, even though bidding on the lots has closed.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources says it expects to award licenses for the woodlots – known as W2068 and W2069 – as early as June.

Kate-Louise Stamford is an Islands Trust representative for Gambier.

The Islands Trust has been asking for a meeting with Minister Steve Thompson, and Stamford says they’re hoping to get one soon.

The Gambier Island Conservancy, meanwhile, has well over a thousand signatures on a petition.  The group says logging would devastate areas they’ve fought hard to protect.
