Nanaimo Ladysmith SD budget talks continue, with jobs on the line

Jobs cuts will be up for discussion when the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District’s business committee takes another look at the budget.

SD68 needs to find $5.4 million dollars in savings. The committee’s been going over a list of 32 strategies for cutting back, and tonight they’re expected to make some key decisions on the jobs that will have to be cut.

Secretary Treasurer Phil Turin says it’s not going to be an easy night.

After complaints that the job cuts were targeting teachers and support staff while leaving administration untouched, District officials came up with a plan to save 390-thousand dollars through cuts that include 1 executive assistant position.

Earlier this week the Committee decided it would not recommend eliminating teacher librarians.
