Council backing liquor store's move to Departure Bay

Despite some concerns from the neighbourhood, a proposal to build a liquor store next to a 7-11 on Departure Bay Road is getting support from Nanaimo City Council.

A zoning ammendment to make it possible passed first and second reading Monday night.

Jennifer Davidson of the Departure Bay Neighbourhood Association says they’re worried having the store nearby will encourage late-night drinking in the area.

Rebecca Hardin is a consultant working with the applicant. She says they heard widespread support during a recent public meeting.

Mayor John Ruttan also pointed out the owners have been good corporate citizens at their previous location and are planning to work with the neighbourhood.

The rezoning, which still has to pass third reading, includes a community contribution of $10-thousand.
