Woman survives long, cold swim after boat sinks

A woman is recovering after spending hours swimming to safety when the boat she was in sank near Texada Island.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre says the boat went down in bad weather around 9:30 Saturday night.

But they didn’t find out about it until 2:30 Sunday afternoon, when a woman in her 30s found her way to a cottage on the Island and called authorities after swimming to shore.

The JRCC says she was in the water for at least 6 hours, and remains in a Powell River hospital recovering from severe hypothermia.

The body of a man who was also on the boat was recoverd late Sunday washed ashore on Texada.
