Lighting causes a number of fires in the Coastal Fire Centre zone

The Coastal Fire Centre has responded to 68 fires this season, including an unusually high number of lightning-caused blazes.
When compared to the entireĀ 2017 fire season, we’ve had more than double the lightning-caused fires in the last two days in the coastal region.
Fire Information Officer Donna MacPherson says the frequency of lightning in theĀ Coastal Fire Centre is uncommon, but crews are well-trained and ready for this.
Due to fires in remote locations, crews are using hover exiting techniques to battle these blazes.
Hover exiting consists of leaving a helicopter without it landing; crew members head out onto the side-runners andĀ the chopper takes them down until their feet hit the ground.
