Nanaimo sends letter saying NO to Metro Vancouver's incinerator

Following a unanimous vote last week, The City of Nanaimo is sending Metro Vancouver a clear message about a proposed incinerator.

The letter, signed by Mayor John Ruttan, says the City wants off a list of potential locations. It also asks for a timely response confirming the message has been received. A copy of the letter is also being sent to the provincial government.

Carla Stein from Sierra Club Nanaimo says that’s what they were hoping the City would do, and they’re waiting to hear whether Metro Vancouver respects that stance.

The letter goes on to say the City is disappointed in the lack of clarity around the decision process. It states that Nanaimo is proud of its green spaces and pristine oceanfront, and residents do not want Nanaimo to be known as the “Garbage Burning Capital of BC”.

Meanwhile, a site near Port Mellon on the Sunshine Coast is also on the short list as a possible location.
