Simons welcomes apparent softening of government stance on ALC changes

NDP agriculture critic Nicholas Simons says he’s glad the new minister seems ready to put the brakes on changes to the Agricultural Land Commission.

Those changes would split the ALC in two zones and loosen the rules for the Agricultural Land Reserve in the North, Kootenays and Interior.

Norm Letnick came out of a day-long meeting with farmers and ranchers yesterday to say he’s willing to reconsider the bill, but he wants a wider public consultation first.

Simons, the MLA for Powell River Sunshine Coast, says he suspected a change of heart was coming after his own meetings with Letnick.

Simons says now the questions are just how broad-ranging will the public consultation be, and is the idea of scrapping the bill altogether on the table?
