Salmon population sees significant decrease on the Sunshine Coast

“Don’t be the town that killed salmon”.

That’s the message the Sunshine Coast Salmonid Enhancement Society is spreading.

With the public consultation underway in relation to the Chapman Lake Supply Expansion project, David Burnett of the local salmonid enhancement society is speaking in favour of the project.

The $5 million project would look to access five additional metres of water in Chapman Lake in the Tetrahedron Park.

Burnett says there has been a dramatic decrease in local salmon stocks and they’ve seen the results at the Chapman Creek Hatchery.

Burnett says time is of the essence. He adds they had 55 fish go into their trap last year, whereas normally, they would catch between 800-1400 coho salmon.
