Sunshine Coast RCMP commander retiring

The search will begin soon for a new RCMP commander for the Sunshine Coast.

Staff Sergeant Herb Berdahl is retiring in July.  He made the news public during an update for Town Councillors in Gibsons.

Berdahl retires after a 37 year career that saw him come back to where he started; it began as an auxiliary constable in Gibsons in the ’70s. After joining the force full time he working in Alberta, the Northwest Territories and throughout BC, before being picked as the Sunshine Coast detachment commander in 2010.

Berdahl says that’s a rare career path.

Berdhal is the detachment’s third CO in the past 10 years, and the transitions haven’t all been smooth.

Berdahl’s predecessor launched a suit against the RCMP in 2012, claiming he was wrongfully dismissed while on medical leave.
