Sunshine Coast local govs not taking a stand yet on Metro Van incinerator, as Duke Point bidders say they're still in the mix

The group that wants to build an incinerator at Duke Point says for now, it’s still in the bidding for Metro Vancouver’s waste to energy contract.

But representatives from Seaspan, Urbasser and Wheelabrator say they’re reviewing this week’s Nanaimo Council vote against the proposal.

David Garcia is with Urbasser;

Malcolm Brodie, Chair of Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Committee says as far as they’re concerned Duke Point is still on the short list.

A site near Port Mellon on the Sunshine Coast is also on Metro’s short list.

Tuesday night, Gibsons Councillor Charlene San Jenko set the wheels in motion for a staff report, that could lead to a vote for or against supporting it.  In the meantime, she’s making her personal feelings clear.

A public meeting is planned for May 24th in Gibsons.

Sunshine Coast Regional District Chair Garry Nohr says they have high expectations.

Metro officials are supposed to host a similar meeting in Nanaimo in mid-May, but it’s no longer clear if it will go ahead.
