Nanaimo council grapples with tent city
The homeless camp on the lawn at Nanaimo City Hall is growing.
It includes some advocates for the homeless who told City Council they are vowing to stay until there’s some urgent action on homelessness, some movement towards a permanent supervised consumption site and a drop-in centre where homeless people can go.
Councillor Gord Fuller says there should be a drop-in centre in place by this summer but the other issues are not quick fixes…..
Councillor Ian Thorpe disagreed with Fuller…..
In the end, the city didn’t make any changes with regards to the path it’s taking in finding another suitable site for an affordable housing project and didn’t deal with the issue of a supervised consumption site at all.
