Oceanside RCMP are warning people to be wary about a scam linked to tax season. In the past week, three Oceanside residents reported receiving fraudulent e-mail or phone calls from somebody claiming to be from the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA). These fraudulent calls or e-mails say personal information is needed to either process a claim, or provide an extra refund.
According to the CRA, they do NOT do the following:
- The CRA will not request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by email.
- The CRA will not divulge taxpayer information to another person, unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer.
- The CRA will not leave any personal information on an answering machine.
