Homeless camp on the lawn at Nanaimo City Hall

A homeless encampment has set up shop in Nanaimo.
This one is at City Hall and it’s in response to the City losing out on a 7 million dollar affordable housing project in the Chase River area.
Mayor Bill McKay says he understands the frustration of those who can’t find housing but there are some affordable housing projects taking place in Nanaimo…..
He says there’s also 185 units for seniors coming on line in the Buttertubs Marsh area and between them all, that’s more than 250 units coming on line.
McKay says the City is working with the province to take advantage of the funding for more affordable housing, but whatever happens has to be acceptable to the community where it will be built.
