AVICC tackles Ferries, with cuts just 2 weeks away

BC Ferries sailing cuts are due to take effect in 2 weeks… but municipal politicians are still hoping the province will change direction.

There was a major rally, and a special session at this weekend’s Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities AGM in Qualicum Beach.

Islands Trust Chair, and Gabriola rep, Sheila Malcolmson says local governments are doing what the province should have done: a study on the economic impact.

So far, the study has found nearly 60 per cent of businesses in ferry dependent communities expect to lose revenue, property values could drop, and people will have to move away.

Lee Ann Johnson is a Councillor in Gibsons.
