Sechelt Council is one vote away from passing a 2014 budget that holds the line on taxes, and no longer includes a controversial roundabout at Dolphin and Trail.
That project was shelved after a lengthy debate on capital spending priorities.
It was Councillor Doug Hockley who spurred things, by suggesting some 750-thousand dollars in projects be cut, in favour of other work like the Davis Bay Wharf restoration.
While other Councillors are also saying the Wharf is a top priority they aren’t committing more money just yet, they voted last night to wait for a report on the fundraising, and a detailed design, in the New Year.
In another development impacting the budget, Sechelt has the final piece of the sewer plant financing puzzle.
Under an agreement signed Wednesday the Sechelt Indian Government, which hooks into the sewer system, will help pay for the waste water treatment plant already under construction.
Mayor John Henderson says the SIGD’s $1.68-million commitment is reducing the amount the District will have to borrow for the 24-million dollar project.
Sechelt had been budgeting for a short-term loan of nearly 4.2-million dollars.
