Island/Coastal municipal leaders gathering in Qualicum Beach

BC Ferries is the key item on the agenda as theĀ Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities opens itsĀ annual meeting in Qualicum Beach.

It’s the subject of a special session Friday afternoon.

Sunshine Coast Regional District Chair Garry Nohr says there’s also going to be a chance to bring other municipal leaders up to speed on what ferry dependent communities have been doing.

Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan says finding a solution to the situation with BC Ferries is going to be a tough nut to crack.

The BC Ferry Coalition is planning a rally outside the convention Saturday. They say it’s going to be aĀ show of support for the workĀ municipal politicians are doing on the issue and a protest againstĀ provincial policies.

Ruttan says another transportation issue is likely to generate a lot of talk; the future of passenger rail on the Island.

The Regional District of Nanaimo had been calling for a special meeting with the Island CorridorĀ Foundation at the convention, but it doesn’t appear that will happen.
