SD 68 plan for trimming budget includes staff cuts

The Nanaimo Ladysmith School Board is facing some tough choices.

The District has released a plan for dealing with a looming $5.4 million budget shortfall, ahead of an April 15th public budget meeting. Phil Turin is SD68’s Secretary Treasurer.

The proposals include staffing reductions, and replacing teacher-librarians in the high schools with lower paid library assistants. If they go through, the staff cuts would be the equivalent of 19 full-time teachers, 25 full-time support staff and 1 administrator.

There’s a public budget meeting Tuesday at Nanaimo District Secondary School. That will be followed by various Business Committee meetings, and the budget could be decided by the end of the month.

School District 46 on the Sunshine Coast is taking its next crack at the budget next week as well, when the Operations Committee meets on Thursday.
