Residents show support for NRE

The writing is on the wall for the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange but those who support the organization are not giving up.
Ilan Goldenblatt is a concerned citizen who is planning on presenting a case to the councils of both Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo this week to support the Recycling Exchange in the move to a new facility and he’s got more than 2,000 postcards of support from people who use the site…..
Goldenblatt says if the councils choose not to support the Exchange, it means more products will go to the local landfill and that will limit the life of that facility.
He says private companies may agree to take items like styrofoam and used mattresses, but they’ll either charge a premium to the user for that privilege, or they’ll look for government support in the form of a subsidy to take care of the not so easy to recycle items.
The lease on the property where the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange currently operates from expires at the end of March and without an injection of cash from the RDN or the City of Nanaimo its future is in doubt.
