Nanaimo Alberni MP James Lunney is renewing his push for limits on the use of prescription drugs for reducing stomach acids.
Lunney says the drugs, known as PPIs, can increase the risk from the highly infectious bacteria c-difficile. C-diff outbreaks in some hospitals, including Nanaimo Regional General, have been linked to deaths.
Lunney says new studies sponsored by the government’s own Canadian Institutes for Health Research provide more evidence of a link.   He wants Health Canada to issue stronger warnings that using PPIs recudes resistance to c-diff.
Lunney first raised the issue in 2004. He says since then the evidence has been mounting, but Health Canada’s response hasn’t been reflecting that.
