Regional District of Nanaimo passes non-confidence motion against ICF

The Regional District of Nanaimo has lost confidence in the Island Corridor Foundation. The RDN’s Committee of the Whole passed a motion to that effect last night. The moves comes less than a week after the ICF announced publicly that Southern Rail and VIA Rail are close to signing a deal to restore passenger rail service to the island.

Nanaimo Major John Ruttan says he wanted the non-confidence motion delayed for 30 days, to see if Southern Rail and VIA Rail are able to sign a final agreement in that time.

Ruttan says he thinks the vote was premature, given the state of negotiations and the number of unanswered questions.

The motion that was passed calls for a task force to be created to assist in reinvigorating the Island Corridor Foundation, but Ruttan says he’s unclear who will be on that task force or how they’ll achieve that. It also calls for a meeting between stakeholders to discuss the future of the ICF, which will likely be a hot topic at this weekend’s Association of Vancouver Island Coastal Communities Conference in Qualicum Beach.
