Overall health and well-being good in Nanaimo, but there are issues

The Medical Health Officer for Central Vancouver Island says he’s seeing a couple of emerging health issues for Nanaimo.

Dr Paul Hasselback presented the 2013 Local Health Area Profile to City Council this week.  He drew attention to a spike in “drug induced” deaths.

Hasselback says another growing issue is the increasing number of families who depend on income assistance.

He says children in those situations don’t fare as well as other kids, and are often more vulnerable, especially in the years before they start school.

He’s also offering praise to the City for things like supporting early years partnerships, adopting a regional food strategy, and including health and social planning in Council’s strategic plan.
