NDP ferries critic calling on Transportation Minister to rethink ferry cuts

With coastal residents concerned about impending cuts to ferry routes across BC, the NDP’s ferries fritic Claire Trevena has sent a letter to Transportation Minister Todd Stone.

“I expressed my disappointment that he didn’t come to any of the meetings where people from the coast where expressing their frustration and their anger about the cuts to their highways,” explained Trevena. “If he had come to these meetings, he’d have heard the real pain that communities and going to suffer and he would have understood why this is a huge mistake.”

She says Stone doesn’t seem to realize the ferry system is part of the highway system. Trevena says it seems like Stone is trying to avoid the issue, but she says he can’t keep ignoring the outpouring of anger over the cuts.

“He has announced these cuts and then he has turned his back on communities. If he had any real intent of doing anything for coastal communities, he would have had a look at the economic impact that such cuts would have. He hasn’t done that.”

She says it is important for people to carry on expressing their thoughts through letters to the Minister and via Twitter. The hashtag #BCFerriesFail is being widely used by those concerned about the impact of slashing sailings, especially on minor routes serving ferry-dependent communities. She says she hopes Stone will start listening and rethinking his position on the cuts.
