2 Nanaimo brothers plead guilty in 2006 death of Gabriola Island man

Two Nanaimo brothers have entered guilty pleas in the 2006 death of a man in a bar fight. Michael Brophy, 20, from Gabriola Island was killed at the Grizzly B’ar, which has since closed.

Timothy and Matthew Maybin, and bouncer Buddah Gains, were acquitted in 2008. The case eventually went all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, which upheld a lower court order for a new trial. The new trail was supposed to start on May 5, but the men appeared in court early.

Timothy pleaded guilty to manslaughter and Matthew pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm in court on Monday, April 7. Neil MacKenzie is Communications Counsel with the Criminal Justice Branch.

MacKenzie says the men will be back in court for their sentencing hearing on April 25th. That’s when Gains will appear in court to face a charge of assault causing bodily harm.
